Lost & Found: Gavriel Maynard

image

Meet, Gavriel Maynard. The 22 year old, Sydney-based photographer who ran through the streets of LA with us for our latest lookbook shoot, Lost LAndia. This dude first caught our eye with his insane-o editorials for Oyster Magazine  and dreamtastic party vibes captured for Mark Hunter, of The Cobra Snake. We sat down with him to get an in-depth look into his effortless style, inspiration, and random insights into the meaning of life…ok not really, but read on!

When & how did you first become interested in photography?

I had some savings after high school and decided to buy a little slr. It sat in a box for 6 months until me and my friends went to europe and it came along with me. I shot everything i could over there and after that was pretty much addicted.

What advice do you have for aspiring fashion photographers?

Don’t shoot fashion! Shoot everything besides fashion until you know who you are as a photographer and why you want to be one. Then apply it to fashion.

What has been your most memorable shoot? (Besides, Wasteland!)

Flying down to Byron Bay to shoot my homegirl Valentina Sykes for Oyster.

When you’re not shooting, what are you usually doing?

Heroin

Who/ What is your biggest inspiration?

There are a million. Woody Allen. Christopher Hitchens. Lars Von Trier. Oliver Stone. Spike Lee. Robert Crumb. Werner Herzog. Juergen Teller. It’s weird, all my heroes are like 50-80 year old men.

Wasted Babe: Staz

image

Meet Staz, our latest local LA muse. We got to work with her for the second time around on our May Lookbook, Lost LAndia and took a minute to give her a little pop-quiz/interview on the spot. Check out what she has to say about her personal musing, fashion inspo, and trends she’d never be caught dead in. Also, check out behind the scenes images from the set of Lost LAndia (our May lookbook) where we took a back alley tour around our radical city (LA) with the babe herself!

What’s Going Down!? Stay Cool…

Don’t get us wrong we’re totally psyched for poolside cocktails this summer, but some days you just need to go au naturel. When you just want to get out of the LA grind and step into the wild, here are the best spots to take a dip just outside the city!

Bridge To Nowhere

If you’re in for a challenge, this place is insane! The spot is located in Azusa California, just a few miles into the San Gabriel Mountains. It’s about a 10 mile hike to the spot and back, but the journey is well worth the destination! Some daredevils come here for bungee jumping, but if that’s not your thing there’s always the great view and a creek to keep cool in.

Check it out here.

Malibu State Park Rock Pool

Located in Century Lake in the heart of Malibu State Park, this is the perfect spot for an LA daycation. The hike down to the pools is pretty mellow, only about 3.5 miles roundtrip. Bring some water, good shoes, and a bikini and you’re good to go.  The park also has campsites if you want to do the whole over night thing. Just make sure you reserve a spot in advance, this is a hot spot!

*Fun Fact: Fox used to own this land and many iconic shows including M*A*S*H and The Swiss Family Robinson were filmed here. Rad!

More info here.

Hermit Falls

Also located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, this is the ultimate hike if you’re looking for a super chill water spot. The hike itself is an easy trail that’s only about 2.5 miles roundtrip, and did we mention it’s chalk full of cliff jumping spots so you can get your dive on?! So save a date and take a dip!

Vintage Vixen: Marianne Faithfull

As the sex-kitten of the 60s, this steezy songstress, starlet, and all around stunner from across the pond came crashing into the limelight haaaard and never really left. And while she was at it, she went and stole the heart of rock ‘n’ roll royalty, Mick Jagger. With an allure that’s equal parts sugar and spice, we can’t help but swoon over her radness and have a little (ok, a lot) of outfit envy over just about everything she rocked back in the day. Check out some of our fave dreamy inspo of this Brit babe and see for yourself why we’re keepin’ the FAITH in this vixen.
